Carol Todaro and I (Tom Virgin) both participated in the workshop and not long after, we were part of a team that put together a proposal for a book arts center for Miami. Although the book arts proposal was not funded, the SWEAT Broadsheet Collaboration grew around the efforts of several Miami writers and artists. Lea Nickless, Carol Todaro, Michael Hettich, Rosemarie Chiarlone, and I invited a couple dozen writers & artists to SWEAT Records’ intimate and cozy little space in Little Haiti. Each writer read for five minutes and each artist projected five works. No AC, cold beverages, and a shared desire to tell our stories were the genesis of that project. Exhibitions of the growing body of work began in 2009 (Wynwood), 2012 (MDC Centre Gallery & ArtCenter South Florida) , 2014 (MDC Kendall), 2015 (Greenlease Art Gallery, Rockhurst University, Kansas City, MO), 2016 (New York Center for Book Arts. NY, NY), and 2019 (MDPLS Main Library). The portfolio is also held by MDC Museum of Art and Design (MOAD) and the Permanent Art Collection of Miami-Dade Public Library System.
